HBCU SUCCESS Faculty Workshops

HBCU Success is a program to support HBCU Computer Science faculty with quarterly, online capacity-building workshops. These workshops aim to help support grant writing focused on supporting Computer Science Education outreach efforts. In addition to the workshops, the program will provide open ‘office hours” for faculty to ask questions about writing grant proposals to the NSF CISE Directorate, other NSF directorates, or corporate funders. Lastly, faculty selected for this program will participate in in-person sessions at the STARS Celebration. This program aims to build capacity at HBCU CS departments to support their departmental outreach activities. 

Workshop facilitator

Workshops for HBCU Success will be facilitated by Dr. Kinnis Gosha. Gosha is the Hortinius. I. Chenault Endowed Professor of Computer Science at Morehouse College. To date, Gosha has been a PI or CoPI on 21 federal awards and contracts including 19 from the NSF. Learn more about Dr. Gosha here.

February 13, 2024 - Budgeting Strategies for NSF or Corporate Proposals
Virtual
This workshop will help attendees maximize budgets for proposals to NSF or to companies. The feedback will be specific to individual goals, rank, institutional situations, current resources, needed resources, departmental politics, and career goals. 

October 31, 2023 - Proposal Setup & Supplementary Documentation (NSF)
Virtual
This workshop will prepare faculty to setup proposals from scratch. Additionally, supplementary documentation will be reviewed that are required in each grant submission.

September 16, 2023 - Securing Departmental and Institutional Support (NSF)
Live from STARS Celebration (Dallas, TX)
This workshop will prepare participants to acquire the necessary internal support to build a sustainable research program. Stakeholders discussed include departmental leadership, departmental colleagues, key staff members, and senior leadership. 

September 1, 2023 - Solicitation Review Strategies (NSF)
Virtual
This workshop will prepare prospective PIs to be able to review NSF solicitations in an attempt to decide WHICH proposals to write based on their true likelihood of funding, opportunity cost compared to other opportunities and overall impact/alignment with the PI's personal and career goals.
